I think the workflow should be something more like:

Image aquisition -> Organising -> Editing -> Printing -> Archiving

How are you supposed to find the image you want to edit if you have not saved it in a logical easily remembered location. It could be months down the track. Personally I use a date based organisation along the lines of:

2006:-
- 01-Jan:-
  - 2006-01-02
  - 2006-01-15
- 02-Feb:-
  - 2006-02-05
  - 2006-02-14
    ……
- 12-Dec:-
  - 2006-12-25
  - 2006-12-31
2007:-
- 01-Jan:-
  - 2007-01-01
  - 2007-01-21
    ……

Layers and layer masks

I intend on re-writing this using layers and layer masks. Layer masks make it SO much easier, you can "undo" a "deletion" by painting the mask white again.

In all cases like this I use layer masks to remove sections of the top layer. It has the advantage that if you "clear" an area you didn't mean to you just paint the mask white and the top layer pixels re-appear.
